On September 12, P-K Rotary presented a donation of $5000 to Lourdes (Hospital) Counseling Center Children Summer Day Treatment Program representatives Dana Oates and Tim Hoekstra.   This donation was through the championing of  Rtn. Kathy Ruggles who initiated the effort and presented by Rtn Gary Troyer.  This support assists the summer school vacation gap in normal school year programs.

The Children’s Day Program at Lourdes Counseling Center currently provides intensive counseling and academic services to children and adolescents who qualify for special education services as seriously emotionally disturbed, or health impaired.  The program contracts with ten local school districts to provide a Day Treatment Program during the regular school year.  However, funds are not available for a program during the summer, and many of the children, who receive up to 20 hours per week of service for nine months, are left with minimal supports from June through August, thus leaving a gap in services that seriously affects the child’s ability to make progress towards recovery.

Children who do not have access to a summer day program frequently deteriorate in their ability to function safely in their homes and in the community.  As a result, many of these children are at risk for placement in a psychiatric hospital, a residential treatment facility, group care or other placements away from the family.  The cost to the child and family, in terms of stress, illness and violence is immeasurable.  The cost to the community, in terms of foster care, crises intervention and residential treatment exceeds several million dollars annually.

The counseling program is part of Lourdes Foundation Mission to support the Mission of the Lourdes Health Network and values of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet; to strengthen the visibility of the network’s Mission within our community; to broaden the base of friends of Lourdes and to provide financial resources to strengthen the Mission of our healthcare services.
